How do I clean my down jacket or sleeping bag?

Close all zips and Velcro fastenings and turn the whole thing inside out. It is best washed in a front-loading machine, but if you don’t have one be sure to use a washing bag or pillow case. It is important to use an enzyme free/mild lux flake soap. Marmot suggests Granger’s Down Wash Plus – available from most outdoor retailers. We recommend using warm water for wash and rinse. Do not use all hot or all cold water. It is extremely important to rinse the down very well. We recommend two rinse cycles. For spot cleaning, Granger’s offers G-Wash Spray Cleaner Plus.

Dry in dryer on a cool low heat. Put two clean tennis balls (or similar objects such as “sock balls”) in with the garment – this will help the down to loft. It is also extremely important to make sure that your down product is dry to the fullest in order for it to regain its loft. Take care when removing the garment from the machine and remove as soon as drying is complete.

Do not dry-clean your down and/or Gore-Tex products, however garments may be professionally cleaned – check your local directory for people who specialise in ‘Down Laundering’.
