Weather Woes at the Olympics

Heavy snow on Blackcomb Mountain postponed the men's super-combined race and called off women's downhill training.

Fog and rain over on Cypress Mountain delayed the women's snowboardcross event and shortened training for men's and women's halfpipe.

The day also brought with it melting ice at the speedskating rink, when the resurfacing machine broke down, and upset spectators at the snowboarding venue as hay bail setting collapsed under melting layers of trucked-in snow.

The weather has been so mild that locals have jokingly called it the Vancouver Summer Olympics.

Olympics update: NZ Speed Skater 17th in Gold Medal Race

New Zealand speed skater Shane Dobbin finished 17th in the men's 5000m yesterday, on the first day of competition. He completed the race 8.78 seconds behind the winner, Dutchman Sven Kramer, who won in 6:14.60, setting a new Olympic record.

Doddin is a four-time world inline skating champion but said it wasn't his day on the ice.

"This week I've been feeling good all week, and was having to slow myself to what I thought would be race pace," he said.
"Standing on the start line I was comfortable and confident."
